The Ninth Wave c.1850

one of the greatest paintings of all time

Biography of the Artist    (1817-1900)
Raised in the Crimean countryside, Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky took to art at an early age and found sketching and painting as natural as walking and talking.  His family was poor and young Ivan knew almost constant hunger and deprivation. Through the kindness of several mentors he was able to attend the prestigious St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in Russia. He excelled in marine landscapes and decided to devote his career to painting seascapes. Aivazovsky haunting visionary marine paintings evoke feelings of wonderment, timelessness, and tranquility. He never tried to render the natural seascape, but wanted to portray the emotions which the oncoming storm generates in the viewer.  He preferred to paint scenes that suggested a feeling for the passage of time, such as the break of dawn, the transition from day into night. The painter derived his colors from nature's own dramatic palette, for the sky and sea --he favored a delicate range of intervening greenish blues and shimmering shades of quiet grays.
